We are delighted to launch our competition in partnership with DG Unlimited and Peter Pan Moat Brae National Centre for Children's Literature.  The competition opens on Tuesday 10 March and closes at 5pm on 31 May 2020.

Entries are now being accepted for the Children's Creative Writing Competition 2020 which celebrates our region and the contribution made by our farming community. There are three categories open to children and young people aged 5-18 years. They are:

Ages 5-7: An Acrostic Poem (BELTIE)

The Belted Galloway with it's signature single white stripe is our region's most famous cattle. Write an acrostic poem with BELTIE by using each letter of the word to start a new line of your poem about these belted cows.

Ages 8-11: Journal Entry (A Farmer’s Diary)

Farmers traditionally kept a journal or diary of activity on the farm. Imagine you have spent a day on the farm - what would you want to record in your journal? Up to 300 words.

Ages 12-18: 500 Word Short Story (A Farmyard Adventure)

There are so many possibilities for adventure on a farm - you can use your imagination or a real-life experience to write your short story. We can't wait to meet your characters and animals, and picture the machinery and landscape. Up to 500 words.

The winning entries in each category, including two runners up, will be displayed at Wigtown Book Festival. The winning child from each category will receive: family entry to Moat Brae (for up to 5 people); a family day pass to Big Wig at Wigtown Book Festival; and an age-appropriate signed book from the competition judge, Vivian French.

The Judge

Vivian French lives in Edinburgh and is the author of more than 300 books for children and young people. Her titles include: The Tiara Club; Tales from the Five Kingdoms; The Adventures of Alfie Onion; Billy Hippo; and Lottie Luna. Vivian loves Dumfries and Galloway, visiting regularly for school visits, Wigtown Book Festival and the Big DoG Children's Festival in Dumfries.
