The Brilliant Abyss

Wigtown Parish Church
In person event
Sat 2 Oct

This is the story of our relationship with the deep sea — how we imagine, explore and exploit it. It describes the current golden age of discovery, and revisits how we arrived here. There have always been two distinct groups of deep-sea explorers with opposing ambitions. One group seeks knowledge, the other, has more commercial ends in mind. The tension between them permeates this book, which ends by looking forwards to humanity's impact on the deep, including mining and pollution and what we can do about it.

About the author: Helen Scales is a marine biologist, writer and broadcaster. Her books include the bestselling Spirals in Time, nominated for the Royal Society of Biology Book Award; the children’s book, The Great Barrier Reef; and Eye of the Shoal. She teaches at Cambridge University, and is a scientific advisor to the marine conservation charity Sea Changers.
