Wild and spellbinding, this is a compelling wartime story of freedom and love on Orkney. It is 1940, and 500 Italian POWs arrive to fortify these windswept islands. Most locals view them with suspicion, but orphaned sisters Dorothy and Constance, already outsiders, volunteer to nurse those who are injured or ill. Dorothy, especially, is entranced by an artist called Cesare, who plans to build an Italian chapel from war scrap and sea debris. But is he who he seems? And will the mistrust between islanders and prisoners bring danger home to roost?

About the author: Caroline Lea grew up on the island of Jersey. Her fiction and poetry have been shortlisted for the Bridport Prize, and her debut novel, The Glass Woman, a gothic thriller set during the Icelandic witch trials, was shortlisted for the HWA Debut Crown Award.
