Scotland likes to hold Robert Burns close. But the “national poet” also had a huge impact across the Atlantic. Burns’s works were frequently reprinted in New York and Philadelphia; his verse was mimicked by an emerging canon of American poets; and, most remarkably of all, his songs were appropriated by both abolitionists and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War era. Arun Sood, author of Robert Burns and the United States of America, explores a sometimes surprising legacy. How did the poet help shape a country he never saw himself?
