Everyone has heard of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson but do you know Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, a French aristocrat married to a dissolute rake and sued by her own mother, and who was also the author of Beauty and the Beast? Or Giambattista Basile, a Neapolitan living under Spanish occupation, who, in the 16th century wrote The Tale of Tales, the earliest collection of European fairy tales and the first to contain versions of Rapunzel and Cenerentola- the original, rather violent take on Cinderella?

For The Fairy Tellers, author Nicholas Jubber went on a journey in search of the originators of the fairy tales we know and love today. Who were these men and women and how did their worlds shape the stories we still tell today?

A superb communicator and performer, Jubber returns to Wigtown to sprinkle a little fairy dust and folk magic over the Book Festival.
