The tale of HM Factory Gretna is an extraordinary one. During the First World War, it was the greatest munitions factory on earth, where the devil’s porridge (aka cordite) was mixed. Of the 30,000 workers, 12,000 were women for whom working with high explosives was “all in a day’s work”. Their contribution to the war effort helped to win the vote. For a new illustrated book, 14 Dumfries & Galloway writers have responded to items in the Devil’s Porridge Museum collection. In this event, they will read their work and discuss the remarkable stories of the workers themselves.
